2014 Commonwealth Games 3000m Steeplechase finalist Kerry O’Flaherty was the runaway ladies winner of the prestigious Seeley Cup in Belfast’s Ormeau Park on Saturday 29 November.  The Newcastle AC athlete ran two fairly even 5k splits (17:15 and 17:26) to finish 37th overall in 34:41.  Louise Smith of North Belfast Harriers was second lady in 83rd overall in a time of 37:19.  It is the perfect end to a season that saw her realise a life-long ambition by competing in a major international games. Despite the modest number of runners, the Dolly’s Brae Race and walk was a roaring success. Most of the roaring was done after, when Morgan, as predicted in this very column last week, took to the floor and did the ‘Hucklebuck’! I asked my good friend Niall Carson if this cataclysmic event was caught on camera. He replied, ‘Sure we were all on the floor in fits of laughter and no-one could’ve held a camera’. The Victoria Park Road relays have become a permanent fixture in the NI racing Calendar. From modest and humble beginnings, Orangegrove AC have turned this into a festival of running. This year the park was festooned with tents and gazebos of all shapes and sizes as hundreds turned up to represent their clubs. Newcastle AC had two teams racing, Senior Men and Masters’ Men; both determined to come home with the bacon. Continue reading
