International Veterans Gallop Around Aintree

Race Report by Red Rum

Newcastle and District AC veterans Thomas O’Gorman (MV35) and Connaire McVeigh (MV40) headed to Liverpool to take part in the 32nd British & Irish Masters Cross Country International which this year was run over the famous Grand National Aintree course just outside Liverpool.

Selected to represent Northern Ireland both Thomas and Connaire ran in the 8km race which consisted of four 2km laps of the famous horse track. O’Gorman remarked the green Aintree pastures reminded him of his training runs on the flat of Mussens Meadow, Clonduff. Pre-race the older veteran McVeigh was seen checking out the Famous Chair and Beeches Brook jumps along the course which reminded him of his Donard Forest mast/quarry trail training. This was O’Gormans first time representing Northern Ireland with McVeigh making his first appearance in a Northern Ireland vest since his track steeple chase exploits at Antrim Forum back in 1993. Podium Finish for Tom at the Run to Remember 5k

Over the weekend, Atlas Running held the second Run to Remember 5k in a very saturated Ballynahinch, with over 200 hardy souls taking part.

Tom Crudgington from Newcastle AC had a podium finish, coming third in a very commendable time of 19:26.

Despite the weather, the race and course was enjoyed by all. Well done to Tom and all the other participants who braved the elements!

The weather for the last week of October was almost as perfect as it can be for marathon running, cold at the start, only 4C, but sunny, not a cloud on the sky, and a light north-westerly – so ok it wasn’t flat calm, but given the conditions we experience in this part of the world, it was as good as.

Merrion Square in Dublin is like you never ever see on this weekend over the year. It is thronged by people with one thing on their mind – excitement, trepidation, torture, the pain? It’s the marathon, there’s no easy way, whether you’re on your feet for less than 2 and a half hours or over 5 hours… it’s a challenge for every single participant. Then there’s the hundreds of marshals and officials and helpers with thousands of spectators, the well-wishers along the way. It is a celebration of humanity… Continue reading
