Acorns XC 1They say that ignorance is bliss and that was certainly the case on Saturday when the by now usual ritual of gathering up of athletic gladiators at the rendezvous point of the Upper Square in Castlewellan steeling them for the battle that lay ahead at the MUSA in Cookstown in the Acorns AC promoted Cross Country. It was a damp and dreary scene as the roll call of the assembled took place; all that were going were there.  Some of those in the posse were aware of what lay ahead thanks to some inside information from Barra Best and kept this to themselves for fear of withdrawals as we needed to keep the pressure on the league leaders Foyle Valley. McGrady Financial Services Junior XC Series 2015/16 Race 3

The 3rd race in the McGrady Financial Services Junior Cross Country Series was held at Kilbroney Forest Park on Sunday 29th November 2015 at 1pm.  Burren Athletics Club hosted Race 3 out of 5, and there was a great turn out by competitors & their supporters, even with the stormy conditions.

The wind and rain were hitting the Newcastle registration jeep sideways, giving Pauline a tough task to keep the sheets dry for the race. The soggy ground made race conditions challenging, but the eager competitors braved the weather and completed their warm up with Burren’s coach. Continue reading

NI & Ulster XC County Down team trials

Eve_1Eve_2Newcastle Athletics Clubs 12 year old Eve Kenneally recently qualified at the Northern Ireland and Ulster Cross Country trials to run for the County Down team in the Under 14 all Ireland  Championship which took place on Sunday.  The races held in Santry Park, Dublin saw a strong field of some 160 under 14 girls from all over Ireland taking part.  Eve, the only Newcastle Junior Club member to take part on the day finished 56th overall , the 3rd County Down runner to finish, with the County taking 7th place.

North Down AC Festival of XC Relays

XC Relays LadiesWith a few weeks break before the next cross country in the league (Ballyclare 5th December), 5 Newcastle AC athletes made their way to Bangor to take part in the North Down AC festival of cross country relays.

The ladies race kicked off at 1.20pm with teams of 3 ladies covering 2,600m (2 laps of the course each). The men’s race followed at 2.20pm with 4 men in each team covering the same 2,600m.

O’Flaherty makes Ireland EuroCross Team for Championships in December

Kerry_2Conditions in Santry Demesne in Dublin on Sunday were kind. After all the rain and wind, it was sunny and dry and the ground held up much better than expected – yes, there was mud but generally it was firmer than might have been expected. Three runners from Newcastle & District AC made it to the start line of the Irish Inter-Clubs Cross-Country Championships. Continue reading
