Ian Bailey Dominates on Slieve Martin

The sun returned to Rostrevor for this year’s third race in the H&D Series. On the summit of Slieve Martin banks of snow still remained from March but this didn’t put off the 203 runners that entered. This week Ian Bailey had a point to prove following his disqualification for taking the wrong route in last week’s Tollymore race.  He wasn’t going to make the same mistake again, having checked the course during the week to ensure he knew where he was going.  Continue reading

The Tollymore race, or the ‘Azalea Walk’ as it was christened by former directors the McCrickard brothers, has evolved over the past few years to become one of the more challenging of the Hill and Dale races. With some steep climbs and sharp fast descents it presents a serious challenge to even the most seasoned campaigners. Notwithstanding this fact 236 athletes registered for the event, eclipsing the 2012 record by 6 and becoming the best attended race in the long history of the series. 2012 witnessed victories for Jonny Steede and Ciara Largey, the eventual ladies’ champion. Men’s champion Andrew Annett had finished third behind Deon McNeilly in second place. Continue reading

219 brave souls took to the line for the now legendary “McVeigh Classic” hill and dale race set in the stunning Castlewellan forest park. Thursday 11th April sees the return of the ever-popular Newcastle AC Hill & Dale Series.  Now, incredibly, in its 25th year the series continues to grow and is more appealing than ever to runners of all abilities.  The most encouraging fact is the increase in female competitors in recent years.  Last year the series broke all records in terms of the number of competitors, the numbers completing the series and the quality of bitter invective bestowed upon the athletes at the start of the races by the organisers (too many to quantify and generally too coarse to print!). Entry fees are payable on race day. Please use this registration system to minimise the huge amount of administration work undertaken by volunteer club members.

If you would like to have your name printed on your Hill and Dale race number you need to register online before midday Sunday 24th March.
