Newcastle, East Down and Burren celebrate the success of the McGrady Financial Services Junior Cross Country Series

A large and appreciative crowd packed into the Assembly Hall of Shimna Integrated College, Newcastle on Monday 18th March to celebrate the success of the young athletes who had competed with dedication and determination throughout the five races of the McGrady Financial Services Junior Cross Country Series. This year the young athletes of Newcastle AC and East Down AC had been joined by those from Burren AC, adding a splash of colour and extra competition to the races. Continue reading

The fifth and final race of the McGrady Financial Services junior cross country series took place on Saturday 16th February. The weather conditions where perfect and as the crowds started to form for the race, the organisers themselves where racing against time to finalise the marking of the course. But thanks to the help of the ‘Sarah Dougherty fan club’ and East Down’s legendary Joe Quinn the course was ready for the eager young athletes.  Continue reading

Ulster Schools Cross Country Championships
Well done to all our juniors who competed at the Ulster Schools XC Championships on Wednesday 13th. Representing the Assumption Grammar School in the Mini Girls race, Sarah Doherty had a fantastic race to finish in 22nd place in a field of 115. Next up was a field of 100 Junior Girls and also representing the Assumption, Elish Doyle, Niamh Doyle and Catriona Doyle finished in 33rd, 34th and 47th place respectively bringing their team home in 5th place. Dearbhla Magee, representing St. Malachys had a fantastic race to finish 12th in a field of 82 Intermediate Girls. Dearbhla has now qualified for the Irish XC Championships which will take place in Jordanstown. A finishing place of 14th for Patrick Sheridan, representing St. Patricks Grammar School in the Intermediate boys race also secured him a place at the Irish XC Championships. Lastly, Nathan McComb finished in 32nd place in a field of 81 Senior boys. Full Results

NI Primary Schools Cross Country Finals
Just before the Ulster Schools XC Championships some of our primary school juniors were in action. Well done to Eve Kenneally who finished in 28th and Kiara Cairns who finished in 39th place in a field of 178 girls. Josh Faulkner finished in 35th place in a field of 191 boys. Full Results

McGrady Financial Services Junior Cross Country Series

The final race of the Series takes place this Saturday, 16th February, in Tollymore Forest Park. Registration opens at 10am with a warm up starting at 10.45am. Please arrive early to register. Prize giving for the Series will take place in March in Shimna College.

Race number four of the McGrady Financial Services junior cross country series took place on a cool and windy Sunday afternoon at Delamont Country Park. As the race officials marked and then remarked the course there was much debate as to what way the weather would treat the gutsy crew of young athletes. Luckily it stayed dry as the head wind and undulating course proved a stern test for all who took part, especially Jerome McCrickard, some 30somthing years too old to officially take part, lead the majority of the younger age group races around the course to ensure no one wandered astray! Race 3 of the McGrady Financial Services sponsored Junior Cross Country Series saw the action move to the scenic surroundings of Castle ward.  However, in the very cold conditions, most were too busy trying to keep warm to enjoy the resplendent architecture of the popular tourist attraction.  Despite the cold weather, the rain stayed away and a full programme of high quality racing was enjoyed by all present. East Down obviously called a party whip and was extremely well represented in an event that could be considered their ‘home’ fixture.  With the District schools’ races it Kilbroney on Tuesday, many of the Burren AC faithful decided not to make the trip to the east of the county, presumably saving themselves for the challenge in the near future.  Notwithstanding the lower turn out from the latest club to join the competition, 114 athletes took part, making the most of the opportunity proffered by the organisers.
